Training and development

Barts and The London is committed to providing appropriate training and developmental opportunities to all staff groups and has adopted the NHS Skills Escalator as the framework to do this.  Our training is designed to equip people with the skills and knowledge they need to undertake their jobs to the highest standard while developing themselves to progress in their careers.  All staff are given the opportunity to discuss their work and draw up a personal development plan with their manager through the Trust’s appraisal system.

The Trust’s specialist in-house Training and Development Department runs a variety of courses. Training and Development, and linked to other departments in the Trust, like Health and Safety and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to provide staff with courses such as, National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), professional management development programmes, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), health and safety, European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), cultural awareness and much more.

The Trust has strong links with Barts and The London Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry and with the School of Nursing and Midwifery at City University to ensure that medical, dental and nursing staff receive the specialised training and support they need. The Trust has over 500 post-registration doctors in training and provides an increasing number of supervised nursing, midwifery and allied health professional student placements.


Medical Simulation Centre

The Medical Simulation Centre, which uses a life-size mannequin to reproduce as closely as possible the treatment of a real patient in an acute care setting, continues to provide training for large numbers of students and clinical staff.
