Nurse and lady

For nurses and midwives at all levels, there is the opportunity to attend leadership programmes such as the Royal College of Nursing Clinical Leadership Programme, the School of Nursing and Midwifery’s Leading an Empowered Organisation programme and the NHS Modernisation Agency’s Leadership at the Point of Care programme. Through our close links with the Nursing School and other academic providers, the Trust supports nurses and midwives at all stages of their career through a variety of educational programmes.

Nurses and midwives at Barts and The London are encouraged to extend their expertise beyond their clinical specialties through Trust-wide projects and multi-professional working. We have well-established shared governance structures involving nurses and midwives at all grades in developing practice, decision making and research – harnessing the expertise, experience and creativity of staff right across the organisation.

Nurses and midwives are increasingly taking on duties traditionally performed by doctors. Nurse-led initiatives in the Trust include nurse-led discharge, nurse-led clinics, and specific nursing roles such as nurse colposcopist, nurse endoscopist, and emergency nurse practitioners in our minor injuries units.

The commitment to providing patients with the highest standards of care is at the heart of all we do, and Barts and The London is a leading trust in the national nurse-led Essence of Care programme, which provides a framework of best practice for meeting the needs of patients as individuals beyond the clinical requirements for treating their medical conditions.

Recruiting the best

The recruitment of nurses and midwives is a high priority for the Trust, and our innovative recruitment and retention initiatives attract a wealth of talent and experience to the Trust.
