Barts and The London Rheumatology Centre provides care and treatment for patients with conditions affecting their bones, joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments. We provide services at three of our hospital sites, ensuring that our patients receive the care that is most appropriate to their needs.
We also provide rheumatology services at Newham University Hospital.
As a large teaching hospital trust, our rheumatology team is comprised of a range of health specialists and experts – including nurses, doctors, consultants, allied health professionals and therapists. By offering this holistic approach, our patients are fully supported throughout their care as we know that rheumatology care does not begin and end when people come into hospital and when they leave. Most treatments however are commenced and monitored in outpatients or day-care.
Advanced technology and treatments
The Rheumatology centre has very close links with the departments of orthopaedics, and radiology. Radiology services are available at both the Mile End and The Royal London hospitals and together include x-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI scanning provided by dedicated musculoskeletal-trained radiologists. A modern DEXA scanner for the diagnosis and monitoring of osteoporosis is utilised at Barts Hospital and is supervised by one of the rheumatology consultants (Dr Jawad).
We also provide the most up-to-date therapies for our patients. Currently, we are caring for more than 250 patients with inflammatory arthritis and inflammatory connective tissue disease who are treated with the latest biological agents including infliximab, etanercept, adulimumab and rituximab. These agents quickly and effectively suppress pain and inflammation. Patient safety is of utmost importance and there are weekly nurse-led supervision and pharmacy-led clinics to ensure close monitoring of these and other potent medications aimed at controlling arthritis.
