Academia

We are committed to providing opportunities for clinical colleagues wishing to develop their knowledge and experience in the area of plastic surgery. As a result, Barts and The London Plastic Surgery Department is developing an MSc in Plastic Surgery.

In addition, the Centre for Cutaneous Research (CCR) has developed postgraduate diplomas in clinical dermatology and aesthetic surgery.

The PGDipAesSurg course

The diploma course leads to a postgraduate degree of the University of London: PGDipAesSurg.

It is a two year part-time course and a web-based distance learning programme. The maximum intake for the course in the first year is 12 part time students.

The course is designed specifically to provide a core curriculum for established surgeons or surgical trainees, who wish to practice in the field of aesthetic surgery following completion of specialist training. The course starts in October and runs for two academic years.

Course content
This intensive course consists of a mixture of structured distance learning, DVD/theatre based clinical teaching, and the completion of a dissertation. We cover the entire spectrum of aesthetic surgery with an emphasis on fundamental principles and instruction in a wide range of techniques. Specific topics are covered in a total of eight modules, four per year each with up to eight teaching packages comprising:

  • Audiotapes of structured interviews.
  • Required reading: a selection of articles relevant to the topic
  • A weekly written assignment

Clinical DVDs cover some practical issues in demonstration/lecture format with clinical patient scenarios and clinical training days will be provided for up to four days with video links. Candidates are also expected to gain additional experience by attending surgical centres locally.
