The Barts and The London Plastic Surgery Department is based at St Bartholomew’s (Barts) and The Royal London Hospitals in London. Both have a long tradition of excellence and this continues today with a rating of ‘excellent’ – the highest possible rating – for the quality of our services from the independent health watchdog, the Healthcare Commission. We also produce some of the best clinical results in Britain.
Our team supports a large number of other services at the hospitals in the clinical management of wounds, scars and soft tissue defects of every description – including those arising from major incidents and large burn injury.
Our teaching hospital status means that we have a higher proportion of doctors and nurses to patients than non-teaching hospitals. Our team includes five consultants, including a senior clinical lecturer, supported by registrars, senior house officers and specialist nurses. Their expertise benefits all of our patients, including those coming in for more routine procedures.
As a large teaching and specialist hospital we are continually pushing the boundaries of medical research to ensure that we are able to provide the most advanced and successful technologies and treatments. We use diverse and highly sophisticated surgical and non-surgical techniques to ensure our patients receive the best possible care.
We provide high quality treatment throughout the entire period of care and ensure that patients and their carers are kept fully informed at each stage. Our patients experience a multi-disciplinary and seamless approach to their care – receiving medical and surgical treatment, high quality nursing care and therapeutic support.
International reputation for excellence in research
Our strong research and academic links with the Centre for Cutaneous Research at Barts and The London, Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry, has resulted in us receiving international recognition for our work in the field of plastic surgery.
In many ways, plastic surgery has become recognised as the broadest and most general surgical specialty, and for its innovation. Visit our research page to find out more about this area.
