Medicines information

The pharmacy service provides information and advice on all aspects of drug therapy to health care professionals working in the Trust’s hospitals and the community. The service, which is free from commercial bias, can also be used by members of the general public.

Clinical pharmacy service

The department has one of the most comprehensive clinical pharmacy services in Europe. It has a large number of specialist pharmacists with experience in audit, drug evaluation and drawing up prescribing guidelines, formularies and shared care policies. Pharmacists run several outpatient clinics including anti-coagulation and high-risk medicines.

In addition to its centralised service, the department has adopted a model of patient-centred pharmacy – whereby pharmacists are based on the ward, generally supported by ward-based clinical pharmacy technicians.

Community services pharmacy

The department also provides services to the Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust and the East London and The City Mental Health Trust from the Pharmacy at Mile End Hospital.

Technical services

Production service – we have a fully licensed preparative services department based at Barts making TPN, cytotoxics, and sterile manufactured items. A Centralised Intravenous Additive Service has expanded both within our hospitals and to patients at home. The licensed production unit can help external customers such as community pharmacists with the supply of formulations, which are not commonly available.

Quality control service – this service can help with problems requiring the analysis of medicines or raw materials. A medical gas testing service is provided and the department is responsible for co-ordinating drug recalls initiated by the Committee on Safety of Medicines.

Dispensing and supply

The Trust has eight dispensaries and a supply service that is co-ordinated from a central store at Barts. We are moving towards technician-led organisation of these functions. Automation and a robotic storage system have helped to smooth the workflow and result in faster work turnaround.

Interface work

We work closely with and have several joint posts with Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust. Local formularies are being developed and a pharmacist-led clinic, monitoring the safe use of some high-risk medicines, is underway.

Academic department

This department forms a bridge between the pharmacy service at Barts and The London and the Department of Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy (University of London). We have a very successful research programme and employ a number of full and part-time researchers. We also undertake clinical pharmacy training and co-ordination and a number of pharmacists of varying grades teach undergraduates and postgraduates at the School and on the wards. We are involved in teaching supplementary prescribing at City University to nurses and pharmacists.
