Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Department (Eye Service) provides a comprehensive service to the local community. The department is also a supra-regional centre for ocular oncology (principally retinoblastoma and ocular melanoma). This service has been based at The Royal London Hospital since 2003.

Ophthalmology has close links with cancer services, endocrinology, diabetes, neurology head and neck specialities (maxillofacial, ENT and plastic surgery); and immunology (including HIV/AIDS). A multidisciplinary approach to patient care means that the service can also call upon orthoptists, an optometrist and a dispensing optician.

The department is part of the North East Thames Ophthalmic Network and has specialist expertise in a wide range of subspecialties.

Outpatient clinics

Specialist clinics are available for the ophthalmic management of ocular tumours, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, neuro-ophthalmology, contact lenses, glaucoma, oculoplastics, lacrimal and orbital disorders. Drive clinics for rapid first appointments exist on both sites. Imaging equipment includes full anterior segment and retinal photography (including non-mydriatic photography and fluorescein angiography). Visual field testing equipment is available at both sites. Orthoptists, optometrists and a dispensing optician support clinics at Barts and The Royal London hospitals. Minor day-case surgery takes place in the department at The Royal London.

Day-case and inpatient theatre

This is a dedicated eye theatre unit with ceiling mounted microscope and closed circuit TV from theatre providing full diagnostic, surgical and training facilities.

Laser surgery

Modern laser facilities provide day-case and emergency treatment. Nd:YAG lasers (used for post-cataract capsulotomy and narrow angle glaucoma iridotomies) and argon lasers (used in a range of retinal conditions, such as diabetes) are available at both hospital sites. A cyclodiode laser enables the management of severe glaucoma at The Royal London.

Inpatient wards

The wards are shared with other head and neck specialities (maxillofacial, ENT and plastic surgery) facilitating multidisciplinary working. There are dedicated eye examination facilities for inpatients and out-of-hour emergencies. Female and male patients are cared for in Henry Butlin and Bedford Fenwick Ward respectively.
