Accident and Emergency
The Accident and Emergency service (A&E) is run from The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. This is a level one trauma centre and operates a Helicopter Medical Emergency Service (HEMS) from a helipad above the A&E Department at The Royal London Hospital. It also has a dedicated children’s A&E Department and there is a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Barts.
The department is unique within London and the UK in its provision of a resident A&E Consultant available 24 hours per day, Monday to Friday.
Services provided:
- A 24-hour, seven day a week comprehensive emergency service is provided including senior accident and emergency staff, triage, nurse practitioners, trauma team, CT scanning, cardiac arrest team, decontamination facilities and specialist opinion from all major specialities.
- A 24-hour dedicated children’s Accident and Emergency service.
- Five-bedded emergency room with en suite x-ray facilities.
- Major incident response plan including the provision of trained, mobile teams and a rota of trained medical incident officers.
The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) More>> HEMS service carries a senior doctor and a paramedic to the scene of serious accidents. The helicopter operates seven days a week in daylight hours. In addition there is a fast response car for use when the helicopter cannot fly or is unavailable.
Physicians Response Unit (PRU) runs from the A&E Department responding to medical emergencies in East London and the City. A senior A&E doctor and paramedic are sent to category A emergencies including chest pain, seizures, patients who have collapsed or are unconscious and some minor trauma cases. The service operates Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
The Whitechapel Walk-in Centre is adjacent to the A&E Department at The Royal London. The service is run by Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust and provides primary care services that complement those of local GP services – no appointment is necessary. The Walk-in Centre is open Monday to Friday, 7am-10pm, Saturday to Sunday and Bank Holidays, 9am-10pm.
The Tower Hamlets Doctors on Call (THEDOC) out-of-hours GP co-operative is also based in the A&E Department.
