Medicine for Members event - Wednesday 23 July 2008

Our second Medicine for Members event and Annual Public Meeting will take place on Wednesday 23 July.

This joint event will highlight our achievements in 2007/08 and focus on our cancer services, including our research into new treatments and the importance of cancer screening.

The event will be held on Wednesday 23 July at 5.30pm in the Perrin lecture theatre, which is located on the ground floor of the Medical School’s Blizard Building at 4 Newark Street (junction with Turner Street), The Royal London Hospital, London E1 2AT. Refreshments will be served from 5.00pm.

If you would like to attend, please let us know by calling our corporate events team on 020 7480 4710 or email: kelley.marriage@bartsandthelondon.nhs.uk.

Previous events

Our first Medicine for Members event took place on Thursday 24 April and was attended by almost 100 patient and public members of our proposed foundation trust.

The event was an opportunity for members to find out more about the prevention and treatment of heart disease, which is one of the major sources of ill-health in our local community.

The evening included talks by leading clinicians from Barts and The London Heart and Chest Centre on our pioneering heart attack centre, which halved patient deaths from heart attacks in its first year of operation, our leading-edge research into whether stem cells taken from a patient's own bone marrow can help to treat heart disease, and on treatments for patients who suffer from irregular heart rhythms. There was also an opportunity for attendees to ask questions.

This was the first in a series of Medicine for Members events for you to find out more about the work of our hospitals and about specific health issues of interest to you and your family.

Future events

We are drawing up a programme for future Medicine for Members events.  Topics could include diet, obesity and exercise, smoking cessation and a session on how clinicians look inside patients' bodies.  We will also draw on the information you provide when you complete the special interests form included in your welcome pack.

If you have a topic that you'd like to see discussed, please send us an email and we will look into incorporating it into the programme.

Annual report

Barts and The London's next annual report for 2007/08 is currently being produced and will be formally presented at the Annual Public Meeting on Wednesday 23 July 2008.

All NHS organisations are required to publish an annual report and accounts, covering events, developments and improvements over the previous financial year (April 2007 to March 2008).

Although there are several items that we are statutorily required to cover in our annual report, we are keen that the report reflects what patients, staff and members of the public think is important.

We won't be able to include everything, but we do welcome your views - so please take a look at our current annual report and drop us an email with any suggestions for how you think it could be improved for next year.
