Accident and Emergency (A&E) including Children's A&E

The A&E service is a 24-hour, seven day a week walk-in service. This means you do not need to book an appointment.

A comprehensive emergency service is provided including on-site senior accident and emergency staff, triage, nurse practitioners, trauma team, CT scanning, cardiac arrest team, decontamination facilities and specialist opinion from all major specialties. It also has a dedicated children’s A&E department.

Whitechapel Walk-in Centre

Located next to The Royal London Hospital A&E Department, Whitechapel Road, Whitechapel, London E1 1BB

The Walk-in Centre offers treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. Assessment is by an experienced NHS nurse. They can give advice on how to stay healthy and information on out-of-hours GP and dental services, local pharmacy services and other local health services. No appointment is necessary. Patients are seen on a first come first served basis.

It is open Monday to Friday, 7am-10pm, Saturday,  Sunday and bank holidays 9am-10pm.

Minor Injuries Unit (MIU)

Located at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, West Smithfield, London EC1A 7BE

The Minor Injuries Unit is staffed by nurse practitioners. They can treat injuries such as cuts and grazes, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, bites and stings, strains and sprains, minor head injuries, and minor eye or ear problems. If an injury requires a specialist opinion patients can be transferred to the A&E Department at The Royal London Hospital.

It is a walk-in service, so no appointment is needed. Patients are seen in order of urgency. The Minor Injuries Unit is open Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm. It is closed at weekends and on bank holidays.

Emergency dental facilities

Daytime emergency dental service

The Dental Hospital provides walk-in services for adults and children with a problem requiring urgent attention. No appointment is needed. Patients are seen on a first come first served bases until the clinic is full, so queuing early is essential for non-urgent cases.

Patients with non-urgent problems should contact their own dentist or NHS Direct.

Location
The daytime emergency dental service for adults is based on the first floor and for children on the third floor of the Dental Hospital at The Royal London.

The dental Hospital can see and treat a limited number of patients each day. We therefore can not guarantee that everyone turning up at the clinic will be seen that day. The daytime Emergency Dental Clinic is part of the Dental Teaching Hospital so patients are seen by undergraduate students under the supervision of qualified staff.

Evenings, weekends and public holidays emergency dental service

On evenings, weekends and public holidays those with urgent dental problems should call the Emergency Dental Service at the times below.

This emergency dental service is for North East London residents only who need urgent dental treatment when their practice is closed. The North East London area is as follows: City of London, London Borough of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge, Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Waltham Forest

Patients can call the Emergency Dental Service on tel 020 7377 7151 to speak to a dentist for free advice and help finding emergency treatment.

The service is open:

  • Monday to Friday, 6.30pm-10pm
  • Saturday and Sunday, 7.30am-3pm
  • Bank holidays, 7.30am-8pm
