Trust Board

The Trust Board is accountable for setting the strategic direction of the Trust, monitoring performance against objectives, ensuring high standards of corporate governance and helping to promote links between the Trust and the local community.

The Board has 12 members – the Chairman, the Chief Executive, four full-time executive directors and six part-time non-executive directors.


Keith Palmer, Chairman Dr Keith Palmer

Keith Palmer joined Barts and The London as Chairman in June 2007. He was previously a Non-Executive Director at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Palmer holds a number of other appointments. He is Non-Executive Vice Chairman of N M Rothschild & Sons Ltd, a major UK-based investment bank; part-time Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Dundee; a Senior Fellow of the King's Fund; Trustee and Treasurer of Cancer Research UK; and Chairman of Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, a public private partnership supporting infrastructure development in Africa.  He is also a Non-Executive Director of IVIMEDS, an international collaboration to improve health education worldwide, and a former Chair of Action Health, a charity promoting improved public health in the developing world. 

Chief Executive

Julian Nettel, Chief Executive Mr Julian Nettel
Chief Executive

Julian Nettel joined Barts and The London as Chief Executive on Monday 3 September 2007. He joins the Trust from St Mary's NHS Trust in London, where he was Chief Executive from 1999.

Julian began his career as an NHS national trainee in October 1975, has worked for the NHS in and around London, including senior management positions at the Whittington and King's College, as well as Chief Executive of Ealing Hospital NHS Trust. He also spent a period of time as Executive-in-Residence at the University of Ottawa in Canada in the early nineties.

Non-Executive Directors

John Adshead, Non-Executive Director Mr John Adshead
Non-executive Director and Vice Chairman

John Adshead has a degree in Economics and Politics from Exeter University and a MBA from Cranfield School of Management. He has spent his career in commerce and industry, starting as a graduate trainee in industrial relations at the Ford Motor Company in 1968. He joined the Bank of America in 1976 and became Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Information Technology and Administration for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He joined J Sainsbury plc in 1989, where he was Group Human Resources and Information Technology Director until 2004.

Mary Elford, Non-Executive Director Ms Mary Elford

Mary Elford is currently Foundation Director of the London North East Community Foundation – a charitable trust that promotes and supports voluntary and community activity across north-east London. She is a trustee of the Camden Society which provides services to people with learning disabilities and is also on the Council of Queen Mary, University of London and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Mary has an extensive background in retail management having worked for the John Lewis Partnership for nearly 15 years. She began as a graduate trainee and held a wide range of managerial positions before becoming Development Manager for the department stores. During this time she gained experience in a number of areas including communications, building and planning, and customer service.

Valarie Owen Non-executive Director Mrs Valerie Owen

Valerie Owen is managing director of a consultancy which advises organisations on social and economic regeneration and sustainable development. She was previously managing director of London First, a business organisation working to improve and promote London. Her professional background is as a chartered architect, surveyor and town planner. Valerie chairs the Sustainable Development Taskforce for London First, is a non-executive director of a large housing association and holds board directorships with the Royal Institute of British Architects and the National Forest Company. She lives in Tower Hamlets, where she is involved in community work, and was awarded an OBE in 2001 for services to architecture and to the community in east London.

Lutfur Rahman, Non-executive Director Mr Lutfur Rahman

Lutfur Rahman is head of family and civil law in a firm of solicitors in Tower Hamlets, having previously spent eight years in an established City law firm. As well as his professional expertise, Mr Rahman has many years of experience of working within the local community. He serves on the board of a number of voluntary and community organisations, including the Tower Hamlets Law Centre and the Poplar and Leaside Regeneration Project, which oversees a budget of 23 million, to be spent on community regeneration activities over a seven-year period. Mr Rahman is an active member of the Labour Party, and is a prospective Labour candidate for Spitalfields and Banglatown Ward in Tower Hamlets.

Professor Nick Wright, Non-Executive Director Professor Nick Wright

Professor Nick Wright is currently Warden of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and Vice Principal of Queen Mary, University of London. Professor Wright studied Medicine at Durham University and went on to train in Histopathology at Newcastle and Oxford universities gaining his PhD in 1975. He is the Head of the Histopathology Unit at Cancer Research (UK) Ltd, President of the British Society of Gastroenterology and President of the Royal Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Executive Directors

Charles Gutteridge, Medical Director Dr Charles Gutteridge
Medical Director - Healthcare Governance

Charles Gutteridge has been Medical Director of Barts and The London NHS Trust since January 2002.  He trained at Cambridge University and The London Hospital Medical College.  He has worked in east London for many years, initially as a doctor in training and then as a consultant haematologist at Newham Healthcare Trust where he was also Medical Director.  He maintains his interest in medical research and education through his position as a Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Andrew Holden, Director of Finance at St Mary's NHS Trust, has joined Barts and The London as Interim Director of Finance and Investment on secondment.

Kay Riley Ms Kay Riley
Director of Nursing and Quality - Healthcare Governance

Kay began her NHS career in Nottingham, training as a nurse at the Nottingham School of Nursing, and held a number of nursing, then senior management positions at Queens Medical Centre, and Nottingham City Hospital over a period of 15 years. Kay then moved to the Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Trust initially as Deputy Director of Nursing, and then Acting Director of Nursing. In 2003, Kay moved to Southampton University Hospitals Trust initially as Associate Director of Nursing with a lead for modernisation, and then as Acting Director of Nursing, before taking up  the post of Director  of Nursing  at Winchester & Eastleigh Healthcare Trust for 3 years.
