Our performance

Fast access

Waiting times at the HPB Centre are excellent:

  • The average waiting time to see a consultant is one week
  • The average waiting time for surgery is two to three weeks
  • New patients with suspected cancer are seen within one week of their referral

New patients are seen within a week of referral in one of the three HPB clinics (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Our Wednesday clinic is solely for newly diagnosed cancer patients. This allows us to devote time to every new patient, to explain the complexity of the problem and the range of solutions available.

All patients requiring an operation are given a date for surgery during their consultation.

Procedures performed

Surgically, we perform over 200 major hepatobiliary pancreatic cases per year. In 2005, we performed:

  • 103 complex pancreatic procedures
  • 17 biliary reconstructions
  • 92 liver resections/procedures

Patient satisfaction

Results of regular patient and referring clinician surveys are available on request, which rate us as excellent in terms of our services provided.

Low rates of infection

At Barts and The London HPB Centre, we continue to have relatively low rates of infection, including rates of the ‘superbug’ MRSA. Figures released by the Department of Health in 2006 confirm that we have the fourth lowest MRSA rate among the specialist hospitals in London.
