North East London Cancer Network

In line with the Calman-Hine report (1995), the goal of the North East London Cancer Network is to reduce the burden of cancer on our population by promoting health so as to prevent cancers, improve the survival of people with cancer and improve the quality of life of all of those affected by cancer.

The network was established in response to the Calman-Hine report ('A Policy Framework for Commissioning Cancer Services', 1995) and the subsequent 'Improving Outcomes in gynaecological cancers' - The Manual (July 1999).  The report provides the basis for establishing national standards for cancer care. The NHS Plan (July 2000) also presents the government's strategy for investment and reform across the NHS, and gives cancer services high priority. These documents can be accessed via the Department of Health website

The National Cancer Plan identified networks as the organisational framework through which its targets would be achieved.  Working together as a network, Primary Care Trusts, NHS Trusts, the voluntary sector and local authorities will provide all the services needed for prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and care of cancers.  The network is also working towards involving patients and the public in all aspects of its work.

Our cancer centre has a well established referral base from regional hospitals including Homerton University Hospital, Newham General, Whipps Cross University Hospital and the Royal London Hospital as well as tertiary referrals from further afield. The relevant member hospitals for North East London Cancer Network (NELCN) are:

  • Barts and the London NHS Trust
  • Homerton University Hospital
  • Newham General Hospital
  • Whipps Cross University Hospital
  • Queens Hospital, Romford (previously Oldchurch Hospital & King George Hospital)
