About us

The Gynaecological Cancer Centre is part of the Women’s and Children’s Services Directorate of Barts and The London NHS Trust. It is a well established cancer centre and is recognised nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence.  It is also accredited by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for the training of sub specialists in Gynaecological Oncology.

Care is based around an extensive multidisciplinary team which meets weekly every Wednesday morning. There are currently five Consultant Gynaecological Oncologists working in the Centre – Ms Karina Reynolds (Lead clinician), Mr Arjun Jeyarajah, Mr David Oram, Mr Christophe Pomel and Professor John Shepherd.

The centre specialises in complex gynaecological conditions, as well as treatment for gynaecological cancers of the ovary, cervix, womb, vulva and vagina.  Treatments may include cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy as well as palliative medicine. Specific areas of expertise include the following:

  • We are the largest national centre for fertility sparing surgery for early stage cervical cancer (e.g. radical trachelectomy)
  • We are a secondary (from GPs) and tertiary (from consultants in other hospitals) referral centre for assessment in recurrent gynaecological cancer
  • We provide major reconstructive surgery, particularly in women with vulval and cervical cancers
  • We provide minimal access laparoscopic assisted surgery
  • We undertake extensive research involvement, including clinical trials
  • We have strong links with family history clinics considering the genetics of gynaecological cancers and risk assessments at Great Ormond Street Hospital
  • We provide ovarian cancer screening for women taking part in UKCTOCS trial (United Kingdom Collaborative Trial for Ovarian cancer Screening)
  • We have Clinical Nurse Specialists, trained with expertise in the care and support of women who have gynaecological cancer in an environment focused on women’s health

In 2001, Barts and the London NHS Trust became the designated gynaecological cancer centre for surgery within North East London Cancer Network. Whilst women have to travel to the centre for surgery they are then able to be seen in various hospitals in the Network where outreach clinics are provided.  An outreach clinic is provided by Mr Jeyarajah at Queens Hospital, Romford and Ms Reynolds and Mr Pomel at Whipps Cross University Hospital.
