Barts and the London Children’s Hospital cares for more than 40,000 children a year in either an outpatient or inpatient setting. Fast access to treatment for these children is a priority for all of the staff of the children's hospital.
The children’s hospital is working towards the new waiting time target of 18 weeks from initial referral to hospital treatment. Waiting times for an outpatient appointment in the Children’s Hospital are below the national target of 11 weeks.
Low rates of infection
Barts and The London hospitals continue to have relatively low rates of infection, including rates of the ‘superbug’ MRSA. Figures released by the Department of Health in 2006 confirm that we have the fourth lowest rate among the specialist hospitals in London.
Young patient satisfaction
In the last survey of our young patients, 90% rated their care at Barts and The London Children’s Hospital was ‘excellent’, ‘very good’ or ‘good’. We performed strongly in areas relating to the information provided for patients and their carers about their care and medication.
Excellent services for elective surgery and day case patients
Barts and The London Children’s Hospital is in the top 25% of NHS hospitals in England - providing child services, rated as ‘good’ by a Healthcare Commission review in 2006. Our facilities for day case patients and our elective surgery were rated as ‘excellent’. The review examined the treatment of children in child specific and child friendly environments and the provision of sufficient staff trained in to care for children.
